An RF systems engineer develops and integrates systems that transmit, receive, process, or otherwise interact with radio-frequency signals.
This can include system architecture, link budgets, RF front ends, filtering, amplification, frequency conversion, antennas, digital signal processing, electronics, embedded software, and system testing.
For aerospace applications, those elements also need to work within the power, mass, thermal, mechanical, environmental, and regulatory constraints of the larger platform.

Space systems engineering is the process of ensuring that the many elements of a spacecraft or space mission work together to accomplish the mission.
It connects mission requirements to subsystem design and considers interactions between communications, avionics, power, thermal, mechanical, software, payload, ground systems, and operations.
Good systems engineering identifies these interactions early, when design changes are still relatively inexpensive.

The radio system is the spacecraft's connection to the outside world.
RF engineering determines whether a spacecraft can reliably receive commands, return telemetry and mission data, communicate with other spacecraft, or perform RF-based mission functions.
Achieving that requires more than selecting a radio. Antennas, transmit power, receiver sensitivity, noise, interference, modulation, data rate, orbit, ground infrastructure, and regulatory constraints all influence the complete communications system.

Architecture decisions made at the beginning of a program can determine what is possible later. Involving experienced RF and systems engineers during requirements definition and preliminary design can identify technical risks, clarify trades, and prevent expensive redesigns.
